Things I found today, that I forgot I had! Post may not be dial-up friendly

Something I found today that I think all fic writers should read (well the ones who get these confused, a lot, at least). I'd scan it in to save me the trouble of typing it in, but I do not have one. (Just posting the most common that I've seen misused.) Generally stuff that just ticks me off whenever I see it on FF.N or any other fic site. especially loose/lose

I had this in a school planner I bought a while back and I feel most of the writers (especially the SG-1 Daniel/Vala sub-class writer at the very least, not all of them. Just most.) should seriously take this into consideration.

Commonly Misused Words:

accept/except --
"Accept" means to receive. Please accept this gift.
"Except" is a preposition meaning not including. I brought everything except the gift

addition/edition -
"Addition" is the mathematical process of putting things together. 2. Anything added; increase; augmentation; as, a piazza is an addition to a building.
"Edition"
1.one of a series of printings of the same book, newspaper, etc., each issued at a different time and differing from another by alterations, additions, etc.
2.the format in which a literary work is published: a one-volume edition of Shakespeare.

affect/effect --
"Affect" means to influence. The rain affected our day.
"Effect" means a result. Rain is the effect of moisture in the clouds

a lot --
Remember to write this as two words. It is improper to write "alot" (which I actually may have done on occasion) A spell checker might suggest "allot" which will change the meaning.

can/may --
"Can" indicates an ability to do something. I can do it if you show me how.
"May" means to be allowed. You may do it after I'm finished.

capital/capitol --
"Capital" refers to a city, a letter or wealth. Hollywood is the movie capital of the world.
"Capitol" is a building where government officials meet. The capitol was crowded during election week.

its/it's --
"Its" is the possessive form of "it". Its color is light blue.
"It's" in the contraction for "it is". It's going to be a beautiful day today.

lay/lie --
"Lay" means to put something down. He lays the place mat on the table.
"Lie" means to recline. She lies down on the sofa to relax.

loose/lose --
"Loose" means not tight. The bolt is loose.
"Lose" refers to being defeated or misplacing something. How did you lose your shoe?

passed/past --
"Passed" is the past tense of the verb "pass". Grandma passed the corn to Billy.
"Past" should be used when referring to time or distance. The corn flew past Billy and landed in my lap.

than/then --
"Than" is a conjunction used in comparisons. Sue ran faster than me.
"Then" is an adverb used with time. Then she won the race.

their/there/they're --
"Their" is the possessive form of "they" Their dog is ugly.
"There" means in that place. The dog is over there.
"They're" is a contraction for "they are". They're taking the dog to the park.

to/too/two --
"To" means toward a direction. I ran to the park.
"Too" means also. I want to go too.
"Two" is the number 2. I own two cars.

and lastly but not leastly....

your/you're --
"Your" is the possessive form of "you". Your shirt is orange.
"You're" is the contraction for "you are" You're wearing an orange shirt.
