A Mary Bennet link (which sums up on how I feel about her)

There's Something About Mary Bennet

The things that make Pride and Prejudice’s middle sister so unappealing as a supporting character are precisely what make her compelling as a star.

Poor Mary. When she pays attention to her at all, Pride and Prejudice’s narrator describes the middle Bennet sibling—younger sister to Jane and Elizabeth, older sister to Kitty and Lydia—as someone who, possessing neither “genius nor taste,” often “wished to say something very sensible,” but—oof—“knew not how.” Mary navigates the world with “a pedantic air and conceited manner, which would have injured a higher degree of excellence than she had reached.” (Ooooof.) A little bit Mr. Collins, a little bit Lady Edith, a little bit Tracy Flick, Mary is at once introverted and attention-hungry, well-read and insipid, vain and insignificant. She is also, her novel’s acerbic storyteller makes a point of informing us, “the only plain one in the family.”

In spite of all this, though, recent years have seen a proliferation of Mary-related—and, indeed, Mary-focused—fiction. There’s 2009’s The Independence Of Miss Mary Bennet, an exploration of the escapades Mary enjoyed after her sisters were married, written by Colleen McCullough, the other of The Thorn Birds. There’s Jennifer Paynter’s 2014 The Forgotten Sister: Mary Bennet’s Pride and Prejudice, which narrates the events of Austen’s novel from Mary’s point of view. There’s also Pamela Mingle’s The Pursuit of Mary Bennet: A Pride and Prejudice Novel, which offers Mary an alternate romantic subplot. And A Match For Mary Bennet, which does the same.

Pride and Prejudice dreams - starring Mary Bennet

(originally posted October 2016)

I had a dream the other night. One in which Mary Bennet was made to live in the attic of Longbourn (it was made into a bedroom) I could tell because to ceiling in her room was pointed. It wasn't too shabby but it was simpler than the other bedrooms in the house. Mary made it comfortable for herself though, the walls were also painted blue A short bookcase full of books, there might have been a desk, a bed, a place to to put her clothes. Also hidden compartments behind the pictures on her walls for hiding her most precious papers and other things.

I'm only typing this thing about because I don't want to forget anymore details.

Wickham is wither a Bennet brother (by birth or adopted when he was young)
(Either that or he got close enough to Mary, like a real brother, when he married Lydia)

Mrs. Bennet is verbally abusive to Mary (and occasionally physical) and George tries to defend her from it (he was wearing his red coat)

And for the record the dream was based off of the 2005 adaptation

This is the second Mary Bennet dream I've had (maybe the third?). I'd written the first one dawn. And I really should have typed up a copy of it in one of my LJ's,

I think i found it but it didn't have as much detail as I'd thought. I'll sum up:

-It takes place after P&P
-Her name is engraved in a hall ceiling along with someone else's (I didn't catch it)
-She catches glimpses of the TARDIS in the crowds around her (stylized images). She didn't know what it was. The more she looked the more she noticed it(Maybe Mr. Darcy knew what was going on)

(this is where it gets REALLY weird)

-Queen Latifah also made an appearance as an actually Queen/Fairy godmother type of person.

-Mary's sisters were around but most of them didn't give her much thought, except Kitty who was nearly always by Mary's side
-Also noted it says that "I think if I had dreamt longer I think the Doctor might have taken mary as a companion"

---

Also I don't know if this was part of the same dream or not (might've been)

Mary and her yummy Mr. Darcy-ish but better admirer (in a scene that reminded me of THAT sunrise scene. mary has he hair down and is wearing a soft purple dress and Mr. Yummy was wearing a soft red (non-military and not pink) coat. Lydia was there and pissed off that Mary found someone before she did (P&P AU where Mr. Wickham didn't run off with Lydia?)

-----

ever notice when I dream of Mary it turns out to be rather Cinderella-ish?

There's something about Mary Bennet - A Character Study

I didn't write this but I like it well enough to post here, with a link to it.

There's Something About Mary: A Pride & Prejudice Character Study

I bet a bunch of you, just like you heartheartheart Disney movies, also heartheartheart Pride and Prejudice. And other things involving bonnets and turns about the garden and going "La!" instead of "Sweet!" when something exciting happens.

Yeah, me too.

So this character study is going to veer away from the normal Disney-fied version and into the world of Pemberly, Pride, and Prejudice. Today, I'm wondering....what on earth ever happened to Mary Bennet?!

Let's check out the facts. What do we know about Mary Bennet?

In Support of Mary Bennet...

I recommend these books (and movies) - It simply isn't fair in my opinion that poor Mary is constantly outshone by both her older sisters and her younger. Having a book mostly from Elizabeth's POV on how she sees things (whether they be biased or only based on "fact") as based on this quote from P&P:

“There is, I believe, in every disposition a tendency to some particular evil, a natural defect, which not even the best education can overcome."

"And your defect is to hate everybody."

"And yours," he replied with a smile, "is willfully to misunderstand them."
(Pride and Prejudice)

is this a hint that perhaps Elizabeth has misunderstood Mary? I certainly hope so!

Movies:
Pride and Prejudice (1940)
Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Books:

- "Return To Longbourn" by Shannon Winslow
- "Longbourn" by Jo Baker (Not based around Mary but the help of Longbourn. It shows Mary in a far softer light than Elizabeth does)
- "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" by Jane Austen and Seth-Grahame-Smith (both the regular and deluxe editions)
- and the sequels "Dawn of the Dreadfuls" and " Dreadfully Ever After" by Steve Hockensmith
- The "Leaving Bennet Behind" series by Sarah Johnson ("Chosen" "Cherished" and "Pursued" are the first three books, there will probably be more)
- "Just to Hear 'I Love You' " by Sarah Johnson - After Mary goes deaf after a childhood accident, she grows closer to her two older sisters, especially Elizabeth who is very protective of her.
- Pride and Prometheus" by John Kessel (What if Mary Bennet met Victor Frankenstein?) in his story collection "The Baum Plan"
- "Mary, Mary Not So Ordinary" and "Mary, Mary Oh So Contrary" by S.M. Klassen
- "Mary Bennet and the Bloomsbury Coven" (Book 1 of the Regency Magic series) by Beth Deitchman
- Mary Bennet: A Continuation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” - by Jennifer Becton (Short but satisfying!)
- The Pursuit of Mary Bennet - by Pamela Mingle

and as a bonus :

- How not to father: Mr. Bennet and Mary

Quotes about mermaids

O, train me not, sweet mermaid, with thy note,
To drown me in thy sister's flood of tears:
Sing, siren, for thyself and I will dote;
Spread o'er the silver waves thy golden hairs,
And as a bed I'll take them and there lie.

--William Shakespeare, Comedy of Errors

In the blue depth of waters,
Where the wave hath no strife,
Where the wind is a stranger,
And the sea-snake hath life,
Where the Mermaid is decking
Her green hair with shells;
Like the storm on the surface
Came the sound of thy spells.

--Lord Byron, "Manfred"

At sea once more we had to pass the Sirens, whose
sweet singing lures sailors to their doom. I had
stopped up the ears of my crew with wax, and I alone
listened while lashed to the mast, powerless to steer
toward shipwreck.

--Homer, The Odyssey

Them sirens loved him up and turned him into a
horny toad!

--O, Brother, Where Art Thou?

For any Hannibal fans

Because I can I'm posting the lyrics to "Love Crime (Amuse-Bouche Version)" by Siouxsie Sioux

Oh, the skies, tumbling from your eyes
So sublime, the chase to end all time
Seasons call and fall, from grace and uniform
Anatomical and metaphysical

Oh, the die, It's cast inside my mind

Oh, the dye, a blood red setting sun
rushing through my veins
burning up my skin,
I will survive, live and thrive
Win this deadly game

Love crime (Love crime)
Love crime

I will survive, live and thrive
I will survive,
I will

And then there's the original version from Hannibal )

The beautiful Talulah Riley

A few times a week I google "Mary Bennet" to see if any new news stories pop up. Happily I found a new behind-the-scenes pic from the 2005 version of "Pride and Prejudice" (taken by Jena Malone who played Lydia Bennet)of Talulah Riley. It's quite lovely.

My favorite LotR bits

One of my favorite bits from the LOTR Trilogy

Book 2, chapter 9 - The Great River

Across the water there were shrill cries, but nothing could be
seen. Frodo looked up at the Elf standing tall above him, as he gazed
into the night, seeking a mark to shoot at. His head was dark,
crowned with sharp white stars that glittered in the black pools of
the sky behind.

---
My own personal beliefs:

-The two Elves reforging Narsil are Elladan and Elrohir.

-The last shot of Legolas in RotK is the Prettiest he's ever been.
